First, what I like about the piece:
I can tell you studied your subject extensively, and it certainly paid off. The proportions are realistic, the colors are vibrant but don't make my eyes bleed, and I can really see the texture in the wings. I like how you put the bird in the environment, with all the snow building up around its feet and drifting onto its head.
Did I mention it's cute? I really like the eye; it's not too beady, but it doesn't dominate the face.
The markings are very distinct and the colors don't bleed into each other but also look like they're part of the same animal. Does that make sense? I hope that makes sense.
Now, some critiques:
It's hard to see at first glance, but after looking at the tail for a while, it makes the bird's pose a bit confusing. We can see the bird's entire back, but the tail doesn't seem like it's lined up quite right. It looks like the tail should obscure at least part of its left leg, or, if the body is what's crooked, we shouldn't be able to see all of the left wing. The shoulders also throw off the balance, and after looking at several blue jay pictures, I don't know if the shoulders are pronounced enough for snow to settle on them. These birds' wings seem to flow seamlessly into the neck while folded, which is not the case in this picture.
A few housekeeping points: There are a few small but sharp "corners" on the chest that need a bit of smoothing, and the sharp edge between white on the end of the tail on the blue stands out underneath the blurred black stripes, but other than that, you're good.
Again, I love the realism of the piece, but it needs a few adjustments in pose. Great job!
